How’re you? Mr.Kim and MID members.
let me introduce myself, I've been taking this class almost 3 years.
at the beginning of this class I was so poor at English I didn't even know how to spell any word. seriously
anyway
I decided to quit my job and then applied for an Australian working holiday visa after 5 years working my job there.
just because I wanted to have an experience of living in an English speaking country. not to study English. I hate studying English. I don't understand people study English with text books written Korean language abroad without hanging out with English speaking people. I saw many Koreans do that in Australia. they study very hard silently alone with textbooks for grammar.
anyway,
so I got back to my place waiting for my visa but it took even longer than others so I had to spend my time working as a bus driver as it was hard to find a new job in their 30's. and I had a heavy vehicle driving license.
and I considered working as a bus driver when I come back to Korea after working holiday in Australia. so I aimed at having a job experience
while working bus driver job. finally I obtained the visa. I was aware that I didn't need to fly out as soon as possible to get the visa.
I had 1 year to prepare to fly out so I didn't quit the job. after 10 month of job experience of bus driver. I handed in my resignation
and said good bye to my family,relatives,coworkers.

you know the other day I posted something to consult with you. that was maybe a week before I fried out to Australia.
I remember that I was too worried about making a living abroad.
despite that I've been really doing well so far without any help seriously by myself in only English!
I arrived in Sydney airport on 3rd Dec. what I had for the preparation was I just booked 5 nights in a hostel that I chose based on reviews on the website called "TRIPADVISOR" due to there was no Korean language review and more than 150 English reviews rated "good"
so I was extremely nervous when changing at Malaysia airport. because this is my first overseas travel plus I'd decided to go for the cheapest international airline. I wanted to experience changing at a different country.
and I had safe flight, good entry into the Sydney airport. even well done to find my accommodation by taking a train and walking with Google map.
my room type was mixed sexual 8 bed room. I was surprised there was no Asian but me and even in my room.
there was an English couple,a Swedish girl,a Norwegian guy,2 French girls,an Irish girl and me from South Korea at that time.
yeah... I was extremely nervous but I got up the nerve to say hello and speak to them.
and when I'm in downstairs at the lounge. there are quite a few foreign people from different country.
I tried to hang out with them. finally I got to make tons of friends there.
most of them are on working holiday or on just holiday enjoying the end of the year.
I've realized the biggest population of Australian working holiday visa holder is people from the UK.
and the Second is from Germany. and from France,China,Italy... from my point of view since I got in Australia
Koreans said that there are tons of Koreans with working holiday visa staying in Australia, but not that many Koreans compared to other countries. maybe so many Koreans don't know where they are originally from, because they are Caucasians so they look like just Australians
besides most of Europeans speak English. so many Koreans have the wrong idea. they said just Chinese,Taiwanese,Japanese are the biggest population of Australian working holiday visa holder. maybe most of young Koreans don't have many chances to talk to them. that's why they got the wrong idea. and they just rely on Korean agency,communities pretending to making a living by themselves. even blogging their travel journals telling people the wrong information. I realized that most of Koreans attempting to make a living in a big city like Sydney,Melbourne.
but even if they arrived in that cities, they end up working in a farm and running out of money or saving some money and coming back to Korea.
yeah..... one of my friends also was in Australia on working holiday. he was working in a farm and only living with Koreans or Chinese. even if he worked inner Sydney, his boss or company is Korean. his Korean educational background is good though, he relied on Korean community or people.
oh... sorry where am I?
so I travel and hang around Sydney with my friends from the UK,France,Germany etc for 2 weeks.
and then I realized some of people in my hostel working in construction. although they are native English speaker. I was shocked. because in Korea,a bunch of native English speakers work as English teacher or in an international company with good pay
but in Australia, so many British,German working holiday visa holders work in construction. because they can speak English. besides working in construction is making good money
my British couple friend tried to look for a job in Sydney. it was easy to find a job due to their natural English communication. but their wage is normally $14 -$17 per hour in a restaurant or a bar or even office job.and just work 5 hours a day, I thought they would get paid well compared to Asians not good at English. because tons of Koreans are obsessed with the minimum wage. so they wanna get paid not lower than minimum wage even if they can't well communicate with English speaking people.
but we don't even know how much is the minimum wage, if they don't offer good money, they don't hesitate to LEAVE. they just leave for a new job.
so I saw quite a few UK people quit their job less than a week after they got a job. they said it was boring,not good money compared to their work.
so I decided to get a construction job. before working in construction, I needed the qualification called "white card" I asked my British friends how to obtain the card.
and they suggested an internet course. at that time I thought the test would be multiple choice questions and I expected it wouldn't be difficult.
but....even British people spend 4 hours to complete the course. because during the course you cannot skip any part. so you have to watch the course all day long.
so I went down stairs at late night as I wanted to be alone during the course.
after taking the course. I realized that I was gonna have 3 part of assessment. the first test was more than 80 multiple choice questions, the second was short answer type more than 50 questions. after completing the Second assessment, I have to make a phone call to them and prove my identification clearly and then they give me some scenario of several different workplace incidents, and ask more than 10 questions of how to solve the problems. so I spent 20 hours to watch the course over and over again in order to become familiar with Australian laws,regulations and hard vocabularies. and memorize them to take the test.
finally it was worth spending all night to study it! I did it!
especially after the Second assessment and then just before making a phone call to them, I was extremely nervous. but I did it!
finally I got the qualification for Australian construction legally
and then I got to know some Italian guy working in construction in my hostel so I asked him how to get a job in construction.
he let me know that his case and I follow his way that was
I posted my ad on Gumtree website for looking for a job with my information and my cover letter for construction.
and then It was amazing! I got 2 messages from different Australian construction companies the next day.
I chose one and then made a phone call that was my Second phone English conversation in Australia for business
finally I had a job, went though some interview got induction for the job.
I was so lucky because they are Caucasian Australians, wife and husband team running the company together. she is in charge of the office.
her husband is my boss on the site.
and my wage is really good even compared to British or German friends.
I'm paid $22.5 per hour plus travel and site allowance ! it's amazing ! even if I'm not as good as English speakers from Europe.
I got a qualification,job in English without any help!
so I worked with them for 4 days and then I take the vacation due to it was holiday season for 2 weeks at the end of the end of year and the beginning
first time I got the pay slip from them, that was my first Australian pay slip !
I earned $ 950 except TAX! even if I only worked 4 days. you know what,
most of Koreans earn $9-12 per hour under Korean business in Australia.
even if they work under Australian boss, they get less than good English speaking Europians do
everyone envies me. even British, Scottish,Irish native English speaking people.
and me and my friends decided to move out for getting our new place to live. so we found a cheap apartment in a great location.
we are a British guy,3 Scottish girls,a Belgian guy and me ! it's been a week since we moved in Coogee!
it's literally 30 sec away from the beautiful Coogee beach and a Post office, banks , woolworth market, bus stop , all we need is within 5 mins by walking.
during the vacation I decided to get a Australian forklift license. because I had a Korean forklift license so I'm confident to handle the machine.
yeah... but the problem is I'm not good at English but I got up the nerve and booked taking the course over the phone in English, I chose just only 2 days course
because I don't need to learn how to run the machine. so after they enrolled me for the training, they email me the textbook. so I had to study and there was requirement which is I was supposed to go through the pre-course learner self assessment in handwriting and bring it to them on the day.
oh... every question type was short answers so I had to be competent for that. I went through very hard.
I attended at my appointment,took the course for the theory class and practiced the forklift
the following day I went through the assessment including verbal,written,calculation and practical test!
so I got the Notice of satisfactory Assessment. and lodged my Application for forklift High Risk Work license at Post office.
I was immensely proud of myself because you know I did it by myself without any help.
I've never gotten to know any Korean so far ever since I arrived in Australia. I go through everything in English.
when I don't know anything in English documents or conversations,
I ask in English.
that makes me happy.......

tomorrow I start working with my boss again for the new year schedule. it was good summer vacation ! yeah... it's ridiculous you know Korea and certain part of US is still in winter now..

한 편의 다큐멘터리를 본 것처럼 생생히 장면들이 그려 집니다.
오래전 처음에 호주에 워킹할러데이로 가신다고 하셨을 때, 많이 걱정하셨던 걸 기억합니다.
그런데 이렇게 좋은 일들이 많이 생겨서, 이글을 읽고 있는 저도 안심이 됩니다.
그리고 저에게 빚지신 것은 없습니다.
제가 한 것은 하나도 없으니까요.
모두 fireposition님이 스스로 획득하신 결과입니다.
예전에 영어를 하나도 모르다가 점점 재미를 붙이시고, 또 그러다 보니 영어를
전공으로 대학을 가고 싶다는 생각을 해 보셨다고 하신 적이 있던 걸로 기억 납니다.
그것으로 몇몇 분들이 성심껏 덧글도 달아 주셨던 것으로 알고 있습니다.
물론 그 꿈은 접으셨겠지만, 이글을 읽으면서 느낀 건데,
fireposition님께서는 대학 영어 전공으로 가셨던 것 보다 더 많은 것들을,
더 값진 것들을 배우고 계신 것이 아닌가는 생각이 듭니다.
영어 전공은 영어 혹은 영문학만을 배우겠지만, 이렇게 영어를 쓰는 사회에서
직접 열심히 노력하시니, 영어도 배우고 새로운 값진 경험도 해 보시는 것일 겁니다.
항상 nervous 하다고 하시지만, 저는 fireposition님이 잘 해 내실 거라
항상 믿고 있습니다.
왜냐면, 항상 fireposition님은 주어진 상황에서 자신을 내려 놓을 줄 아시는
분이시기 때문입니다.
자신을 자꾸 세우면, 자신이 높아져서 주위가 자신보다 낮아 질 겁니다.
그렇게 높아진 자신에게 맞출 주위 환경이나 상황은 없을 겁니다.
항상 자신을 내려 놓고 주워진 환경을 자신보다 항상 높다고 생각하는
겸손함이 있어서 이런 일들이 가능하다고 생각합니다.
낮아진 자신은 그래서 항상 노력하게 됩니다. 높은 주위의 환경이라는
벽을 넘어서기 위해서는 노력 밖에는 없을 테니까요.
항상 지금의 노력과 기백 잃지 마시고, 또 타지에서 건강 해치지 않도록
잘 드시고 잘 쉬십시오.

뭐~ 커다란 기회나 능력을 발휘하는 현실과는 거리가 먼 그런 "성공신화"같은 이야기가 아닌 누구나
맘만 먹으면 현실가능한 이야기, 지금 미드에서 공부하는 우리들의 마음자세를 바꾸게 해주는
정말 현실적이면서도 도전가능한 경험담을 들려 주셔서 도전하는 오늘이 되게 해주셔서 감사한 마음입니다.
저도 미드에서 공부한지 꽤 되었는데... 아직도 영어를 말하려하지 않고 공부하려는 자세가 쉽게 바뀌지 않아 고민 중인데....이 글을 읽으며... 영어는 생활임을 다시 숙지하게 되네요.
올 연말에는 저도 저의 생활담을 영어로 써 볼 수 있도록 올 한해 영어와 연애 함 해 보아야겠네요 ㅋㅋ

한번씩 게을러질때 이런 글을 읽으면 나이는 숫자에 불과하다는 유명한 광고문구가 생각이 납니다. 제 나이 만으로 45이지만 다시 한 번 힘을 내서 더욱 더 열심히 영어를 연습해야겠네요 다들 열 연습하세요 저는 영어는 공부라는 것 보다는 수많은 반복이라고 생각해서 공부보다는 연습이라는 단어를 더 좋아합니다. |
